Home decor and decorating is so exciting and rewarding. This season is a great time for home decor inspiration. It’s so much fun with plenty of resources to dive into. I have gathered some creative straightforward home decor inspiration that you will love. Don’t let anyone put you in a box when exploring your home decor inspiration, remember it’s your home. In college, I was going to major in architecture and interior design but fashion won out. But decorating is still one of my favorites. I’m across the board when it comes to my design style. I’m very eclectic when it comes to style.
My favorite design styles are upscale farmhouse, rustic bohemian, mid-century modern and urban modern. If you look at my home you would find a combination of all the styles I love with rustic bohemian as the core. My backdrop is mostly white and neutrals, with creative unique accessories, layered throughout my home.

I’ve learned keeping the same theme throughout your home makes it easy to style and gives you longevity with your staple pieces and accessories. For instance, doing the holiday season I will move one of my couches in the living room into my dining room bump out window. I find during the holiday season we’re entertaining more in the dining room and this provides additional eating and seating space.
We recently, let me be honest it’s been about a year now since we did some major renovations to our home. The open-style floor plan is my favorite design. I love an open floor plan where you can visually see your whole space with little to no wall interruptions. So we knocked down walls and had hardwood floors installed throughout the first level of my home.
We decided to upgrade the carpet in the family room since we’re always laying on the floor hanging out. My kids do a lot of sleepovers in that room so we felt carpet would be the best choice. I figured financially it would be cheaper to do hardwood floors throughout except for the sunken in the family room to create one cohesive look.
My kitchen also got a facelift including beautiful new granite counterparts, that I love. We had our cabinets painted a gorgeous linen white, that opened up the whole space even more. Because we’re a family of six with lots of family nearby I thought it would be a good idea to enlarged our island which then leads me to upgrade the lighting for the island and adding some additional recess lighting to the space. To create a more cohesive space we decided to replace our tile floor with hardwood flooring. Which united the entire first level of our home.
Here are a few tips I used when designing my space: Start a vision board of how you want your space to look and feel. Do your research just like you would any other project or investment. Decorating is a lot of fun and very rewarding, but it is also an investment of your time, energy and emotions as well as money. Make it fun and remember everything can be changed if you don’t like it.

The more research you do in the beginning will help to ensure a successful remodel at the end. Tear out pictures from magazines and books to get ideas of what you like and don’t like to put on your board. The internet has amazing interior design resources such as One Kings Lane, House Beautiful, Elle Decor and Pinterest. Start a Pinterest home decor board to gather all of your online interest.
When deciding your theme or look of your space imagine yourself actually living in the room. For me, there were many looks that I loved online or in a picture but could not actually live day to day in that space. I found doing field trips to model homes and open houses to be very helpful. It gave me and my family the opportunity to momentarily live in the space to see if the decor would be something we could live in.
Lighting is very important in the success of your design and they’re so many choices to choose from. It creates a beautiful ambiance and can be a statement piece in your design space. Lighting sets the mood and adds to the shine and glitter of the room. Choosing the correct lighting to raise our oxytocin levels which are responsible for emotional joy. Don’t forget your candles!
Another tip would be bringing in some type of artwork and cool accessories that really express your style and home. You do not have to break the budget with expensive artwork and accessories. Retail and online stores like T.J Maxx, IKEA, Wayfair, Pier 1, and Minted are great places to start looking for amazing pieces that will not crush the budget. Please keep in mind thrift and consignment stores as well as yard sales. I always find unexpected unique treasures at a great price.

The most important tip in your design process is to keep it FUN! Choose not to make this a stressful event for yourself or your family. If you find yourself more stressed and frustrated than happy and excited, definitely take a break for a week or two. This process can definitely be consuming. Get back to doing some of the things you put on whole while you’ve been working on your space. Remember your doing this for you and your family, not to impress or get approval from friends and family.
Best of luck! Please let me know if I can assist you with your design.
